Monkey Reserve

The Monkey Reserve at Punta Laguna was created in 1986. But the fight for the protection of this jungle began earlier in the 1930’s when a Maya “Chicleros” called Ignacio Canul founded a village here. In the 1980’s Three of Mr. Ignacio Canul’s sons decided to take administrative steps to protect the natural habitat of the Spider Monkeys and the Howling Monkeys that live in the area.

They have formed a cooperative that allows the inhabitants of the village to earn an income which supplements their traditional way of life. We will learn many Spider Monkey facts, find out why the Spider Monkeys have taken Sanctuary here and discover the habitat that they live in.

Spider Monkey Fun Facts for Kids

  • One of the spider monkey’s most prominent features is its long, prehensile tail. The tail is used as fifth limb that helps it move through the dense vegetation.
  • Spider monkeys are named so because they hang from the trees by holding different branches with their limbs and long tails when they release their grip they swing through the trees like a spider.
  • Spider monkeys do not have a thumb. Their four fingers are curved and look like a hook which is specially adapted for life in the forest.
  • Spider monkeys are arboreal animals which means they spend most of their life in the treetops they can rarely be seen on the ground.
  • Spider monkeys are very social animals. They live in the groups called troops. As they are mostly active during the da spider monkeys will separate into smaller groups to search for food.

Spider Monkey Habitat

Geoffroy’s spider monkeys live in various types of forest, including rains, semi-deciduous and mangrove forests. Higher densities of Geoffroy’s spider monkeys are generally found in areas containing evergreen forest. They are native to South East Mexico and Central America.
